Over 300 attendees converge on Seattle today to celebrate Fat Joy within community this weekend. Fat Con is the biggest fat convention on the West Coast, a three-day celebration of fat bodies and fat lives. After the success of its inaugural year, Fat Con 2025 is back and bigger with over 30 hours of workshops and panels, a marketplace of vendors offering products and services specifically for fat consumers, and a fashion exhibition showcasing extended size clothing. The convention also features keynote speakers who stand on the front lines of fat liberation.

What is Fat Joy? “Fat Joy is the radical idea that I can love myself at this size or any size. That I am happy and fulfilled in the body that I have,” says Con Director, Mx. Pucks A’Plenty. “Love and joy are revolutionary acts in the face of a culture that tells us we’re simultaneously too much and not enough.”

Fat Con was born out of a need for spaces where the fat community could gather and connect in safety, apart from the constraints and expectations set by culture. For example, culture constrains which bodies can be beautiful or activities in which fat bodies can participate; culture sets the expectation that “fat” is the same as “illness” or “inability.” Attendees of Fat Con come for fun, learning, and connection all seeped in acceptance–a recipe for Fat Joy.

Miranda, creator behind Softcore, a plus size alternative clothing brand found in Fat Con 2025’s marketplace, says “Fat Joy to me is living life unapologetically in my fat body. Everything society tells me I couldn’t achieve because of my size, I have achieved. I’ve walked in fashion shows; I pay my bills with money I make from my plus size brand; I’m in a long term, committed relationship with someone who loves me. These are all things that society tells us that we cannot do while fat, and I love the fat life I live.”
